Kane Lodge Foundation Funds Microfilming

The Kane Lodge Foundation, of New York City's Kane Lodge No. 454, recently donated $3500 to the Livingston Masonic Library for the specific purpose of microfilming the Masonic Standard, a weekly Masonic newspaper published in New York City at the beginning of this century. "The Masonic Standard contains vast amounts of information related to the history of Freemasonry in New York State," says William D. Moore, former director of the Livingston Masonic Library, "but it is so fragile that parts of it are lost every time a researcher uses it."

Kane Lodge's generous donation of funds for microfilming will ensure that the information in the newspaper will be available for centuries to come. The actual filming will be contracted to the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, Massachusetts, one of the nation's leading providers of preservation services.

The Livingston Masonic Library maintains a large collection of Masonic newspapers and magazines published around the world over the last three centuries. Many titles held by the Library exist nowhere else in the world. Scholars travel from across the country and around the globe to do research in these resources at the Livingston Masonic Library. Unfortunately many items, like the Masonic Standard, were printed on poor quality paper. Unless these items are microfilmed the information in them will be lost forever.
